Meet the MCCCD Helios Pathway Scholars

Hilary Arce

Phoenix College, Marketing

“I want to work for a nonprofit organization that advocates for Hispanics, especially those from immigrant communities. I understand the struggles and pain of these families and want my education to provide solutions and resources. My experience gave me a purpose to be a voice for their stories, fight for them, and bring awareness to all communities.”

Hilary grew up knowing every grade mattered. Her parents left everything behind in Mexico so their children could have a chance. When fear and self-doubt nearly made her walk away from college, the memory of her brother’s deportation and her family’s heartbreak lit a fire in her she couldn’t ignore. Hilary fights for her education not just for herself, but for immigrant families like hers. She is pursuing a marketing degree at Phoenix College and plans to work for a nonprofit helping others in similar situations.

Desiree Manrique

South Mountain Community College, Behavioral Science

“I have lived much of my life in survival mode, navigating challenges that once made hope feel out of reach. Yet through those experiences, I’ve discovered an unwavering sense of gratitude and a powerful calling to advocate for children who face similar adversities.”

Desiree survived an abusive home life. She is dedicated to breaking those dysfunctional family cycles and becoming an advocate for children and families in need. She is pursuing her behavioral science degree at South Mountain Community College so she can become a licensed clinical trauma therapist.

Rachel Watkins

Glendale Community College, Education

“My education means everything to me, and I am so grateful for the lessons I have learned along the way. I am now a more resilient and dedicated student and future educator.”

A transformative program in Spain awakened Rachel to the world of education. After teaching English abroad, she came back to the U.S. to pursue an education degree at Mesa Community College, with the ultimate goal of becoming an elementary school teacher.
