Meet Helios Ready Now Yuma Scholar: Karina Esquer

San Luis High School, Class of 2022

Emory University

I grew up in the small border town of San Luis, Arizona, and spent much of my upbringing in San Luis Río Colorado, Mexico. I often commuted between the countries, experiencing life on both sides of the border. Growing up in a border town gave me the best of both worlds and allowed me to fully embrace my Mexican-American heritage.

From a young age, I became aware of the stark differences between the healthcare systems in Mexico and the United States, a realization shaped in part by my father’s healthcare journey. As the daughter of Mexican immigrants, I’m now pursuing a degree in Human Biology and Anthropology at Emory University, following the pre-medical track.

Being awarded the Helios Ready Now Yuma Scholarship has been truly life-changing. My family and I are deeply grateful for this opportunity. It has made it possible for me to pursue my education and work toward my lifelong dream of becoming a physician. Words can’t fully express how thankful I am for the support that’s helping me turn my dreams into reality.
