Meet Helios Ready Now Yuma Scholar: Alexandra Alvarez

Gila Ridge High School, Class of 2025

Northern Arizona University

I could start by telling you my name, but honestly, there’s nothing too special about it. What truly matters isn’t the name itself, but the story behind it. I’m Alexandra Alvarez, and although my name may not stand out, the person behind it has walked a path shaped by both blessings and battles.

My life has been abundant in love, but not without struggles. I had to mature quickly from a young age. Life pushed me to mature quicker than most. I had to prepare for a reality where my parents weren’t always present. As a young Hispanic woman aiming for a brighter future, I’ve had to be strong, resilient, and focused. Coming from a hardworking, low-income family, pursuing dreams can sometimes feel like a luxury, but I’ve never let that stop me.

Everything changed the day I received the Helios Ready Now Yuma Scholarship. That moment lifted a tremendous burden off my shoulders and reminded me that there are people who genuinely care. It wasn’t merely about the financial support; it symbolized belief and hope. The scholarship not only assisted with educational expenses; it helped me believe in my own future. It reminded me that in a single day, your life can take a completely new direction.

Thanks to this opportunity, I’m now attending Northern Arizona and majoring in nursing. The scholarship allows me to focus on my studies and pursue my passion of becoming a doctor. My aspiration is to work in the medical field as either a pediatrician or a radiologist. After completing my undergraduate degree, I plan to apply to medical school and continue striving toward that dream. I understand it will be challenging, but I’m no stranger to adversity—and I’m prepared to face this challenge head-on.
