It is with bittersweet yet heartfelt congratulations, that Helios announces Dr. Karen Ortiz’s departure from Helios Education Foundation. Karen has been with Helios since 2007 and in that time has overseen more than 58 grants and community investments totaling $44 million in both Arizona and Florida. During her time at Helios, she has focused on building and strengthening early childhood systems to promote language acquisition and emergent literacy for children birth through age eight. She has been laser-focused on helping more children in Arizona and Florida read at grade level by the end of third grade setting them on a path toward future academic success.
Karen’s deep passion and commitment to early childhood education has been evident throughout her more than 30-year career in the field. In addition to practical experience with school districts and in classroom settings, she served as an early childhood policy advisor to Arizona’s Governor Janet Napolitano and was Director of the Arizona State Board on School Readiness prior to joining Helios.
Karen will continue her early childhood work through consulting and writing as she moves to Spain to join her husband who resides there.
Karen’s last day with the Foundation is Friday, May 3. She will be assisting in a seamless transition for Helios’ Early Grade Success partners and grantees.
