University South Florida Mentor-Graduate Luncheon

True to the motto “We must lift as we climb” graduates of the University of South Florida’s (USF) Latino Scholars program honored mentors and supporters, including Helios Education Foundation, at the 2019 USF Mentor-Graduate luncheon held in April.
Over a decade ago, Helios’ gift of $1.25 million to the Latino Scholars program seeded an endowment that supports high-achieving, low-income minority students at USF with tuition assistance. “Helios believes that education is an investment, and not an expense. By providing scholarship support through the USF Latino Scholars program, more students will be the first in their families to experience success in postsecondary education, in their chosen career, and in life,” said Braulio Colón, Vice President, Florida Student Success Initiatives with Helios Education Foundation. In addition to financial support, Latino Scholars are paired with a mentor that provides not only professional guidance but also an opportunity for students to engage in community activities that grow their career network.
Annually, the mentor-graduate luncheon provides students an opportunity to reflect on their postsecondary journey, their individual and collaborative accomplishments, and acknowledge the powerful impact of the Latino Scholars program. “Thanks to the USF Latino Scholars and the support of many people at USF, I am now a college graduate,” said Josie Plata, USF Latino Scholar. The 2019 Mentor-Graduate luncheon honored the accomplishments of thirty-three graduates, many who will continue their education by pursuing graduates degrees.
Helios is honored to support such high achieving and ambitious students.
