With the increasing demands on the 21st-century workforce, all students should graduate from high school prepared for college and career success. However, improving the skills students need is a major challenge across the country and Arizona is no exception. In 2011, Helios Education Foundation began to talk about developing a comprehensive, high-school reform initiative focused on ensuring all students in a particular district were prepared for success in college and career. Through this work, a partnership with Yuma Union High School District was formed and, in 2012, an initiative called Ready Now Yuma was born.
This initiative provides students with a rigorous, high expectations curriculum within a college-going environment. The end goal is to increase the number of students entering and succeeding in postsecondary education.
To document this innovative partnership, Helios and the District producee a feature-length documentary film that provides an overview of the initiative including both the successes and the challenges. In addition, the documentary profiles three students and their pursuit of postsecondary education.
