Message from the President and CEO
Author: Paul J. Luna, President and CEODecember 11, 2014
In October, Helios launched a year-long celebration marking the Foundation’s 10-year anniversary. Through a decade of strategic partnerships and investments in education, we are pleased to share that we have invested more than $155 million in education initiatives that have impacted the lives of well over 135,000 students and 16,000 educators in Arizona and Florida.
Ten years into this work, we have developed four fundamental beliefs:
- We believe education changes lives and strengthens communities.
- We believe education is an investment, not an expense.
- We believe every student, regardless of zip, deserves a high-quality education
- We believe we can’t do this work alone. We need true collaboration and partnership to achieve our mission.
That collaboration across sectors is fundamental if we are to ensure that every student graduates high school fully prepared to achieve a postsecondary education and compete successfully in today’s global economy. Our investments and partnerships over the past decade have also helped shape our focus on the three reform priorities needed to achieve our long-term goal of ensuring that every student is ready for college and career: Early Grade Success, College and Career Readiness and Postsecondary Completion.
Helios’ views its role as much more than a grant-making organization. We are an actively engaged partner, working in communities across Arizona and Florida contributing our expertise and resources to improve education systems and set more students on a path to completing a postsecondary certificate or degree. The organization works to leverage broader community partnerships, engage opinion leaders and advocate for education reform in support of improving student outcomes across the education continuum.
We also recognize that while we have made significant progress over the last 10 years, there is much work yet to be done. We will continue to need the commitment and leadership from all segments of the education, philanthropic, government, faith-based and business communities. Collectively, we look forward to a future where every student has the opportunity to pursue and complete a postsecondary education.
